It was because of my mom…

Every time I would ask her to go outside to play with my friends, she would look into my eyes and say, “promise that you will come back in time?”

To which, I would promptly say yes. She would reply with, “I trust you.”

Even when life was terribly tough because of those anomalies, I clearly stayed out of trouble. I didn’t do drugs. I didn’t hang out with the wrong folks. I drove safe. I obeyed rules even when nobody was watching. And I didn’t create much chaos.

Because somebody I loved so much trusted me and I never wanted to break their heart.

This “I trust you” stays with me everywhere I go. It guides me through difficult times.
