Design and Relevance

Some things don’t translate well across cultures.

Why the sign? We don’t drink tap water here.

And sometimes, the designer sacrifices usability for aesthetics.

Yesterday, I was at BRAC Bank. The place where they keep deposit slips is a piece of glass. And there are ballpoint pens to write your slips.

Can you image how inconvenient it is to write on glass with a ballpoint pen? But a lot of people take that inconvenience because somebody didn’t give it a thought.

And don’t get me started on push-pull doors. Very few places in this town get that right.

If we put the right people in the right place, our city wouldn’t be so badly designed.
